Cornwall - July 10, 2013 - The boyhood dream has come true for Sean Monahan. At last Sunday’s NHL Entry Draft in New Jersey, the Brampton, Ontario native was chosen 6th overall in the first round by the Calgary Flames. As General Manager Jay Feaster called out his name, Monahan and his family became overjoyed.

Excepted to go in the top 10 by International scouts, Monahan has spent his entire OHL career with the Ottawa 67’s and will be a tremendous help with the rebuilding Flames. Averaging over a point a game this year, Monahan has finished the past two seasons with 78. Not bad considering that this year’s squad finished dead last in their conference and league as their rebuilding continues as well.

A 6’2” left handed centreman, Monahan is sure to use his size to his advantage as he works his way through this week’s rookie camp. Along with his strong hockey sense, it should be easy for him to impress the Flames brass and earn himself a spot with the club. The Flames are in desperate need of a top line centre with fire power after losing Jarome Iginla to the Boston Bruins and Jay Bouwmeester to the St. Louis Blues.

Sean Monahan could prove to be that guy. As a strong offensive centre, he provides immediate help to the Flames who are struggling with that spot on their roster. Keep your eyes on this kid and the Flames in general folks. Feaster might actually know what he’s doing this time.
