Quenneville hired as Panthers coach
Joel Quenneville was named coach of the Florida Panthers on Monday. Quenneville is the second-winningest coach in NHL history and guided the Chicago Blackhawks to the Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015. Quenneville was the longest-tenured coach in the NHL before being fired by the Blackhawks, who hired him on Oct. 16, 2008, to replace Denis Savard.

Sunrise - April 8, 2019 - Joel Quenneville was named coach of the Florida Panthers on Monday.

The three-time Stanley Cup winner replaces Bob Boughner, who was fired Sunday after the Panthers missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second straight season since he was hired June 12, 2017. The Panthers (36-32-14) finished 12 points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference this season despite having three 30-goal scorers (Mike Hoffman, 36; Aleksander Barkov, 35; Jonathan Huberdeau, 30).

They were 44-30-8 in 2017-18, Boughner's first season but finished one point behind the New Jersey Devils for the second wild card from the East.

Quenneville is the second-winningest coach in NHL history and guided the Chicago Blackhawks to the Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The 60-year-old is 890-532-137 with 77 ties in 22 seasons with the Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche; only Scotty Bowman (1,244) has more wins. Quenneville was fired by the Blackhawks on Nov. 6, 15 games into his 11th season with Chicago.

"Joel is a three-time Stanley Cup champion head coach who will be a transformative leader for the Florida Panthers franchise," general manager Dale Tallon said. "We've seized the opportunity to add one of the most successful head coaches in hockey history and we're thrilled that Joel has agreed to take on the challenge of leading our promising young team.

"I've worked with Joel previously and have seen firsthand how his passion for the game, head coaching experience and leadership can impact an organization. Joel will accelerate our growth into a club that qualifies for the playoffs consistently and competes every year toward our goal of winning the Stanley Cup."

Quenneville was the longest-tenured coach in the NHL before being fired by the Blackhawks, who hired him on Oct. 16, 2008, to replace Denis Savard.

The Panthers have not qualified for the playoffs since 2016, when they finished first in the Atlantic Division under Gerard Gallant. Florida has made the playoffs twice since 1999-2000 and has not advanced past the first round since 1996, when the Panthers won the first three playoff series in their history before losing to the Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Final.
