Clever contract manuvering gives Murray flexibility

Buffalo - Jul. 19, 2014: The Buffalo Sabres’ dismal 52-point campaign in 2013-14 was punctuated by a historically bad offensive output that put the team nearly 40 goals behind the next closest club and well below the 200-goal plateau. It was a campaign that brought about the long overdue firing of Darcy Regier, the introduction of Tim Murray along with the groundwork to select Sam Reinhart second overall at this year’s entry draft. Buffalo - Jul. 17, 2014: Development Camp is an interesting event for a few reasons. It offers onlookers their first look at many of a team’s recent draft picks mixed in with other organizational prospects. Zemgus Girgensons and Rasmus Ristolainen, a pair of players who are likely penciled into the Sabres’ opening night roster at this point. While they’ll certainly stand out due to where they are on the development curve, my interest in them is much lower than other individuals and groups. FULL STORY

Buffalo - Jul. 17, 2014: The Sabres annual prospect’s scrimmage came and went last night with a sloppy 5-1 win for Team White. Two of the most obvious standouts were Nikita Zadorov and Rasmus Ristolainen. The two towering defensemen were split between the two squads but they were certainly noticeable when they were on the ice. Zadorov was very active joining the rush and even chipped in with an assist as his booming slapshot caught the end boards and wound up on Jerome Leduc’s tape for a tap in to open the scoring. Buffalo - Jul. 9, 2014: If you're worried about the Sabres winning, just take a look at this photo. With the rest of the summer still ahead of us before the start of the 2014/15 season, there’s still plenty to speculate about and plenty of time to spend on it. The Sabres made some solid additions, but they won't be enough to keep the Sabres away from the top of the draft. FULL STORY

Buffalo - Jul. 3, 2014: GM Tim Murray may have inherited a clunker of a roster from Darcy Regier, but the Buffalo Sabres organization still had good bones despite the kamikaze job Regier did on the roster prior to his departure. One of Regier’s final acts continues to bear fruit for the Sabres as the trade that sent Thomas Vanek to the Islanders may serve as a major catalyst for Buffalo’s rebuild. FULL STORY

Sabres celebrate Canada Day by adding some Canadiens
Ryan Womeldorf

Buffalo - Jul. 2, 2014: Overall, the Sabres improved, becoming a more competitive, steadier team. They’ve given themselves options so they aren’t in a position where they need to force prospects into the lineup. And to dispel the notions that the tank is off: this team didn’t get that much better. They added a couple of okay scorers to one of the worst offensive teams in NHL history and added two solid defensemen. They still lack depth on offense and have question marks at goalie. It’s going to take a helluva lot more than this to make this team a competitive playoff team. FULL STORY

Edmonton - Jun. 29, 2014: This appears to be the type of no-brainer that the Oilers have been waiting for since the first tee time in May. MacTavish has been preaching the need to add a top-pairing defenseman since the middle of last season, and it would now appear he has a chance to do so. FULL STORY
