Ottawa - July 18, 2013 - Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day:

“Today, I join people around the globe in celebrating Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday and the fifth annual Nelson Mandela International Day.

“Nelson Mandela is a model of humility, grace and forgiveness, whose life and teachings are an inspiration for all those who strive for freedom, democracy and reconciliation.

“In 2009, Canada joined 192 other United Nations member states in declaring July 18th Nelson Mandela International Day, in recognition of the 67 years Mr. Mandela devoted to serving the people of South Africa.

“To mark this special day, I encourage Canadians from all walks of life to make a difference in their own communities through individual or collective acts of service and kindness.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer him our thoughts, prayers and best wishes.”
