Letter To Editor - Harper delivers lacklustre document
The Harper Government’s Throne Speech on Oct. 16 was a lacklustre document which failed to address the real issues facing everyday Canadians in these uncertain economic times. The Throne Speech was short on details and new ideas and long on rhetoric and political messaging. It lacked a comprehensive jobs strategy to stimulate the sluggish economy, to create jobs, and to assist the 1.3 million Canadians who are looking for work.

Cornwall - October 18, 2013 - Dear Editor:

The Harper Government’s Throne Speech on Oct. 16 was a lacklustre document which failed to address the real issues facing everyday Canadians in these uncertain economic times. The Throne Speech was short on details and new ideas and long on rhetoric and political messaging. It lacked a comprehensive jobs strategy to stimulate the sluggish economy, to create jobs, and to assist the 1.3 million Canadians who are looking for work. It did not deal with the Senate expense scandal nor did it even mention government accountability.

With the growing income inequality in Canada, the Federal Government should take steps to ensure that the large, profitable corporations pay their fair share of taxes. This would help pay for public services and programs that will provide jobs, prosperity , sustainable development and improve public healthcare, employment insurance, pensions, and access to post-secondary education.

The Harper Government, with its continued emphasis on cutting essential public services and providing corporate tax giveaways to the large, profitable corporations, continues to move the country in the wrong direction. Canadians deserve better.
