Williamstown - April 22, 2014 - The Williamstown Friends of the Park have been awarded a $79,200 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). MPP for Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry, Mr. Jim McDonell and OTF representative Paulette Hébert congratulated the local volunteer group on the new splash pad project which is set to begin construction in June, 2014.

“This grant will help give children in South Glengarry a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and stay active in the heat of summer. Access to public recreation is an essential component of a family’s quality of life and a tangible measure of the community’s commitment to one another. Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry is a wonderful place to call home, and through the contribution of the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Friends of the Park we can continue to strengthen this reputation,” commented Jim McDonell, MPP for Stormont- Dundas- South Glengarry.

“The OTF grant represents the final piece of the puzzle for us in terms of funding for the splash pad. Its benefits will surely be enjoyed by families all across South Glengarry. We were told by the grant coordinator that we were chosen as one of only a small number of organizations in this part of Ontario to receive such a grant, an area that stretches from Pembroke through Ottawa and extends to the Quebec border. Unlike other municipalities, The Township of South Glengarry do not currently have a public pool, wading pool, or splash pad so we were considered prime candidates for this grant. It will certainly help revitalize the park," stated Heather Grant, a member of the Friends of the Park. "Receiving the grant, especially one so big, reaffirms the importance of providing increased access to safe, outdoor recreational facilities. It will benefit not just children, but also parents, grand-parents, and other caregivers as it will be within walking distance of two schools, a day care, and Ontario Early Years Centre Programs. The Township's Children's Summer Camp program also takes place at the Paul Rozon Memorial Park so it will be well used ”

“The Township of South Glengarry takes pride in the parks and recreational facilities available to our residents,” stated Mayor Ian McLeod. “On behalf of Council I would like to congratulate the Friends of the Park for their dedicated fundraising efforts and their success in securing the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant.”

A leading grantmaker in Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the capacity of the voluntary sector through investments in community-based initiatives. An agency of the Government of Ontario, OTF builds healthy and vibrant communities.
