Windsor - February 1, 2013 - Today is a very special day for Cayuga, Ontario’s McKelvie family. Sara McKelvie is the niece of my “brother from another mother” Dave Tonner, and she is representing Canada at the Special Olympics Winter Games in PyeongChang, Korea.

This morning we found out that Sara won a gold medal in figure skating. On her Facebook page, Sara’s mom Morag (Dave’s sister) posted one word. G O L D. Sara, who is autistic, has been skating since the age of 4 and trains with the Hamilton Dofasco Special Olympics Club.

Recently interviewed by The Sachem and Glanbrook Gazette, the 16 year old said she had no expectations. “Just go out there and have fun. As long as I go out there and do my best, I’ll be happy.”

Sara’s cheering section in Korea includes her mom Morag, grandmother Jeannette, and great aunt Mary. When it was podium time, I am willing to bet there wasn’t a dry eye among them. Congratulations, Sara, to quote an old Tina Turner song, you’re “Simply The Best!!”
