Athletes arriving in Cornwall for boxing championships
Athletes from 15 different countries are arriving at the NAV CENTRE to prepare for these weeks 2012 Women's Elite Continental Boxing Championships.

Cornwall - Apr. 3, 2012 - Athletes from 15 different countries are arriving at the NAV CENTRE to prepare for these weeks 2012 Women's Elite Continental Boxing Championships.

Each athlete is looking to take home a medal and many are hoping to qualify for their countries’ Olympic efforts in a few months in London, England.

“NAV CENTRE is a very busy place right now, with athletes and officials arriving each day,” said Kim Coe-Turner, General Manager of NAV CENTRE. “Our staff is excited to welcome so many people to Cornwall - and Canada - for the first time.”

The Championships take place at NAV CENTRE’s Campbell Hall from April 4-7, 2012. The competition is open to the public: weekly passes are $25, while a day pass is $15. Passes are available at the NAV CENTRE reception desk.

The top female boxers in Canada are already in town for the event, which will feature elite women from North, Central and South America. Among them are Mandy Bujold and Mary Spencer, both potential Olympic medallists in London this summer.

Other teams have also arrived, including Mexico, Brazil and the 10 women representing Team USA. Other teams will be arriving shortly.

First round action begins on Wednesday, April 4 with quarterfinal competition taking place on Thursday, April 5. The women will compete in semifinal round action on Friday, April 6 and vie for gold in the event finals on Saturday, April 7. All of the sessions will begin at 7 p.m. ET nightly. The Women’s Continental Championships can be viewed via livestream at www.gfl.tv.

The President of the American Boxing Confederation (AMBC), Mr. Doming Solano, will be present, along with an International Technical Official team of seven people, all from Latin America. The AMBC represents forty-four countries throughout the Americas.

Mr. Pat Fiacco , the President of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association, who also happens to be the Mayor of the City of Regina, will be present for the entire competition.
