Edmonton - July 9, 2012 - This past March, acclaimed film producer Avi Federgreen and Guy Lavallee announced the launch of RIVER VALLEY FILMS - a new, Edmonton-based production company designed to bolster the city’s reputation as a first-class filming destination. Following the Edmonton premiere of Federgreen’s film Moon Point, the company invited local writers and filmmakers to present their ideas at RIVER VALLEY FILMS’ first Edmonton ‘Pitchfest’. Today, RIVER VALLEY FILMS is thrilled to announce the acquisition of their first feature film script: Eric Pauls’ The Folk Singer.

“We’re so excited to be partnering with Eric to further develop this script into production,” says Federgreen. “When we announced the launch of our company a few months ago, we told everyone that we wanted to make films written by Alberta writers, directed by Alberta directors, and made 100% in Alberta! Going into development on a great script by one of Alberta’s hottest young writers is exactly what we want this company to be all about.”

RIVER VALLEY FILMS aims to make great films that showcase the variety of landscapes and characters found in this province. “What immediately drew me to Eric’s script is the sense of place and character,” says Lavallee. “This charming coming of age story features such indelible Alberta landmarks, and yet it’s so relatable to anyone who’s ever wondered what’s beyond their own backyard. I think it’s the perfect project to introduce the River Valley Films philosophy to the world.”

As for the writer of The Folk Singer? Eric Pauls has been working as a writer, producer, and director in Alberta since 2007, running his company Hundred Million Pictures. While he has found success in television, corporate video and short films, Eric’s goal has always been to write features. “I was honoured when RIVER VALLEY FILMS expressed interest in my script,” says Pauls, “and I feel very lucky to be working alongside such talented people!”

About The Folk Singer
The Folk Singer is a coming-of-age road trip about a slightly disillusioned 17-year-old boy pursuing his dream of becoming a folk singer. In the end the young folk singer will learn that life is not about the destination, it’s about the journey and the people you meet along the way.
