Edmonton - January 18, 2012 - Day Three in Melbourne produced the first major upset of the tournament, as American Mardy Fish was eliminated in straight sets. While the eighth seed was sent packing, favourites Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Australian teenager Bernard Tomic all advanced to the third round.

Nadal had little trouble with veteran Tommy Haas in winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 while Federer moved on to the next round, without even hitting a single ball. The four time Australian Open Champion was to take on Andreas Beck but the German pulled out, due to a back injury.

That left Bernard Tomic as the main attraction of day and the youngster did not disappoint. While he pulled off the big upset of round one, in beating Fernando Verdasco, Tomic was the favourite in his second round match against Sam Querrey. The American managed to take the opening set from the youngster but the thirty-eighth ranked Aussie was too much handle, in winning 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. Tomic didn't dominate the match by any stretch but he did keep points alive and simply waited for the hard hitting American to make mistakes. Querrey had fifty-two winners on the night but his fifty unforced errors, played right into the hands of the young Australian. If Tomic manages to pull off another upset against thirteenth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov, a likely date with Federer awaits him in the fourth round.

In the big shocker of the Open, eighth seed Mady Fish was dismissed in straight sets by veteran Alejandro Falla 7-6, 6-3, 7-6. Fish was his own worst enemy on the day, committing fifty-eight unforced errors and looked off his game from the get-go. The American was constantly braiding himself throughout the match but it had little effect, as the errors continued to pile up. Give Falla credit, he recognized his opponents struggles and kept his game plan simple and allowed Fish to, essentially, eliminate himself.

Other seeded players securing a spot in next round were Tomas Berdych, Nicolas Almagro, Juan Martin Del Potro and John Isner. The sixteenth ranked Isner was the beneficiary of a brutal call from the chair umpire late in the fifth set, of a great match against David Nalbandian. The call turned the tide and allowed Isner to secure a hard fought 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6, 10-8 victory.

Day Four will have top seed Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Canadian Milos Raonic and Jo-Wilfried Songa all in action but the match of the day could very well be between two former number one players in the world. Australian Lleyton Hewitt will do battle with American Andy Roddick in what has the makings of an outstanding second round match-up.
