Edmonton - August 7, 2012 - Canada’s Derek Drouin has taken home a surprise bronze medal in the Men’s High Jump at London 2012. This coming on the heels of what had been a rather tough 24 hour stretch for the Canadian Olympic team.

Drouin finished in a tie for third with with Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim and Great Britain’s Robert Grabarz at a height of 2.29 metres.

The native of Corunna, Ontario, earned Canada their first medal in the high jump since 1976, when Greg Joy took home a silver in Montreal.

Shortly after winning, what was easily the most unexpected of all of Canada's medals, the Canadian Olympic Committee released the following statement from the overjoyed youngster:

“I thought a medal was a realistic possibility. I had to sit there and wait for Jamie Nieto of the U.S.A. to miss his jump to confirm the bronze medal. That was really hard. It was great to celebrate on the track with the Canadian flag signed by my community in Sarnia. Their support has been amazing. I can't wait to get my medal tomorrow night.”

The unexpected medal gives Canada eleven for the games, 1 - Gold, 3 - Silver and 7 - Bronze.

The result could not have come at a better time for Canada, as they have been left reeling after a controversial loss in women's soccer on Monday night and the unexpected crash of Simon Whitfield during this morning's triathlon.
