Edmonton - August 28, 2012 - You may have noticed that the Legislature Building is looking festive as of late. The lit dome, the party banners; it’s all in preparation for one big free Party Under the Dome on September 2 in celebration of the Alberta Legislature Building’s 100th year.

“One hundred years later, the Alberta Legislature Building has become the foremost symbol of the democratic process for our province. Rich in history, tradition and majestic architecture, it is a most cherished landmark,” said Hon. Gene Zwozdesky, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. “Join us for a Party Under the Dome to mark the 100th birthday of this grand building.”

“For 100 years, the Alberta Legislature Building has been a reflection of what, and who, we are as a province,” said Hon. Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Alberta Culture. “This centennial event is an opportunity to celebrate our history and cultural vibrancy among family, friends and community members, and will be cherished in our personal and collective memories for the next 100 years.”

“For a century the Legislature Building has stood as the physical home of the Members of the Legislative Assembly,” said Infrastructure Minister Wayne Drysdale. “Within these walls there have been lively debates where important decisions have been made, forging a province with a proud past and an exciting future.”

Remarks will be brought by His Honour, Col. (Ret’d) the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, Lieutenant Governor; Hon. Alison Redford, Premier; Hon. Gene Zwozdesky, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly; Hon. Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture; Hon. Wayne Drysdale, Minister of Infrastructure and Edmonton Acting Mayor, Councillor Ed Gibbons. As well, Bill Stephens, senior vice president of the Alberta-based ATCO Group, will present a legacy gift to the Provincial Archives of Alberta.

The highlight of the program will be a re-enactment of the 1912 opening ceremony of the Legislature Building performed on the building’s front steps. A composite of the September 3, 1912 event, the re-enactment will combine various elements of the 1912 celebrations into one presentation with all the significant historical figures represented by actors.

Continuing the step back in time, the long-awaited reveal of the time capsule will follow. The capsule was unearthed from the cornerstone of the Alberta Legislature on June 18 of this year, launching the centennial celebrations.

The Family Fair will continue on into the afternoon, offering a variety of free activities and home-grown entertainment on the ATCO Centennial Stage. But the party won’t stop there. The celebrations will continue into the evening with the Centennial Concert, featuring Paul Brandt, Big Sugar and Brett Kissel. And the icing on the cake? A fireworks spectacular will close the event.
