Windsor-Essex - February 17, 2015 - Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day, Fat Tuesday or Paczki Day ... today Tuesday, February 17th indulge before the start of Lent. This was a day for feasting and having a good time. People went to church to confess the bad things they had done and would be 'shriven' or forgiven before the start of Lent. As rich foods such as eggs were forbidden during Lent, one way of using them up would be to make pancakes.

Since moving to the Windsor-Essex area we devour paczki pastries (PAWNCH-ki) which are deep-fried chunks of dough flattened and filled with strawberry, Bavarian cream, blueberry, custard, raspberry, and apple. They're usually covered in powered or icing sugar or orange zest and they're dangerously addictive.

If you're in Windsor and on the hunt, here's where you can get the scrumptious Polish creations.

Steimar Bakery (where we get too much of our fill): 2640 Ouellette Ave.

Blak's Bakery: 102 Langlois

European Market: 1390 Walker

Italia Bakery: 571 Erie Street

Nana's Bakery: 2936 Dominion Boulevard

Sunrise Bakery: 1395 Tecumseh

Pancake Suppers are happening all around Windsor-Essex. Here are a few:
