Cornwall - Jan. 22, 2011 - Chesterville's Bryan Helmer may have just secured his spot in the AHL Hall of Fame.
The three-time Calder Cup champion and veteran defenceman with the Oklahoma City Barons recently reached the 520-point mark to become the league's all-time leading scorer among blueliners.
There was another local hockey connection to Helmer's milestone. The previous AHL scoring leader among defenceman was none other than former Cornwall Royal standout John Slaney.
Now in his 18th pro season, the 38-year-old Helmer has notched 122 goals and 398 assists in 986 AHL games. Beyond the success he's found in the AHL, Helmer has also enjoyed a number of stints in the NHL with Phoenix, St. Louis, Vancouver and Washington.
After winning the Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears last year, Helmer returned home to Chesterville with the cup to celebrate with family and friends.
