Good, Bad and (Mostly) Ugly: Sabres vs Minnesota Wild
The Sabres put out one of their ugliest efforts of the season last night, losing 7-0 to the Wild.

Buffalo - January 16, 2015 - Following every Sabres game, we’ll be taking a little look at the previous night’s action with a little segment called “good, bad and ugly”. Expect a loooooooot of ugly.

I don’t know what I’m going to say, but I’ll try my best: let’s get into last night’s horribly ugly 7-0 loss to Minnesota.

The Good

Remember back in late November/early December when everyone was panicking about whether or not the Sabres were ruining the tank effort? Yeah, about that.

Since December 16th, the Sabres have dropped 14 of 15 (their last win coming in a shootout over the New York Islanders back on December 27th) and they’ve looked hideous during that stretch. They’ve given up 57 goals over that stretch (3.8 per game) while scoring just 21 (1.4 per game).

They’ve been about as bad as bad can be and there doesn’t appear to be anything they can really do about it unless Enroth/Neuvirth are playing out of their minds. Even then, there’s still a better-than 50/50 shot that they’ll lose anyway. You can’t out-suck Buffalo, Edmonton!

The Bad

At least no one got their hopes up, right? This one was over before it even started thanks to a pair of first period goals. The Wild poured it on in the second before picking up a pair of “f-you” goals in the third period to cap off the beatdown.

Losing 7-0 is probably bad enough on most nights, but the Wild weren’t exactly world-beaters. They’re last in their division, were missing half of their defense and starting a goaltender they’d traded for the day before. And they still shelled the Sabres.

Johan Larsson can whine and cry about not getting his chance with the Sabres, but it’s clear that the front office is just protecting him. This season is long gone and there’s no point for him to be getting beat down every night.

The Ugly

I’m not sure if he’s fatigued or simply regressing back to the mean, but holy crap on a cracker has Enroth been bad of late. Last night was the drizzling shits, seeing him allow seven goals on 37 shots including goals from even-strength, the power play and the penalty kill.

I don’t think anyone was delusional enough to think that his stretch from November to December was him becoming a great goalie, but I’ve seen enough of him over the last few years to know that he’s a helluva lot better than this.

My one concern about being bad this season is that it’s going to ruin whichever goaltender is still here at the end of the season and the Sabres don’t really have a ton to bank on as far as goaltending prospects go. Plus, I think Enroth is talented and plays his butt off, so I’d like to see him succeed if at all possible.
