Windsor - March 10, 2019 - The Windsor Spitfires fell 4-1 on Saturday in Flint to the Firebirds. Meanwhile, the Erie Otters were 5-3 winners at home over the Mississauga Steelheads. As of today, the two teams are tied with 56 points for the final playoff spot in the OHL Western Conference.
The Otters have a game in hand on the Spits. The Spitfires have three games left - this afternoon in Sault Ste. Marie against the Greyhounds, at home Thursday against the Firebirds and they finish it out on Friday on the road against the Sarnia Sting. The Otters have four games left - Tuesday in Mississauga to take on the Steelheads, at home Wednesday against the Kitchener Rangers, on the road Friday to take on the Guelph Storm and they finish it out Saturday when they host Guelph with the second game of a back-to-back.
The Spits play two of their three games against sub .500 teams - Sault Ste. Marie (.695), Flint (.262) and Sarnia (.461). Meanwhile the Otters play all four of their games against teams over .500 - Mississauga (.523), Kitchener (.516) and Guelph twice (.656).
Mathematically, the Saginaw Spirit have a shot to clinch first in the Conference. However, it appears that either the Spits or the Otters will meet the London Knights in the first round.
The OHL has an interesting tie-breaking formula for teams tied for the last playoff position….
At the conclusion of the regular season, if there is a tie for the last playoff position, the standing of the team’s playoff position shall be determined by the following tie-breaking procedure:
Between Two Teams - A sudden-death game shall be played between the two teams with the winner being declared higher in the standings. Such game is to be played on Tuesday, March 19th at one of the two teams centres with such centre to be determined by the OHL tie-breaking method.
It should be interesting to watch these two teams over the final week of the OHL Season.
