Raleigh - February 23, 2015 - Carolina Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis indicated he will probably be active before the NHL Trade Deadline, at 3 p.m. ET on March 2, but any players moved will most likely be unrestricted free agents, according to the Raleigh News and Observer.

"You never say never on re-signing them, but at this point we're headed down the road of moving as many pieces as we can and getting back pieces when we can," Francis told the paper. "I think at this point we will be moving UFAs, but you always get a lot of calls on players at this time of year."

One player Francis made clear he has no interest in trading is center Jordan Staal, after a report in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review suggested the Pittsburgh Penguins could have interest in reacquiring the No. 2 pick in the 2006 NHL Draft.

"We're not moving Jordan Staal," Francis told the News & Observer.

Veteran defenseman Andrej Sekera and Tim Gleason, and forwards Jiri Tlusty, Jay McClement and Patrick Dwyer, are among Carolina's unrestricted free agents that could attract interest from teams looking to add for a run at the Stanley Cup.

The Hurricanes are 15th in the Eastern Conference and 27th in the overall League standings with 49 points. At this point Francis is building for the future through possible trades and the 2015 NHL Draft, where Carolina could have a shot at selecting Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid or Boston University freshman forward Jack Eichel if they land one of the top picks.

"I said from day one I would take a look at what we had, make assessments and then do what's right for the franchise in the short term and the long term," Francis told the paper. "We're building for the long haul."
