New York - March 12, 2015 - The New York Islanders announced Thursday that defenseman Johnny Boychuk has agreed to terms on a seven-year contract.

Financial details of the contract were not released, but Newsday reported it's worth $42 million, for a $6 million annual average value.

Boychuk could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

"Ever since I came to the Islanders, the organization has been incredible to both myself and my family," Boychuk told the Islanders website. "I am proud to be an Islander and look forward to competing every night in front of such a passionate fan base for many years to come."

The 31-year-old has played a key role in the Islanders' drive to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season. He leads Islanders defensemen with 32 points, and has a plus-17 rating averaging 21:37 of ice time. He has 137 hits and 125 blocked shots.

"Johnny’s influence in our dressing room, both on and off the ice, has been immeasurable," Islanders general manager Garth Snow told the website. "His veteran presence is an asset that we are thrilled to help lead our club."

The Islanders acquired Boychuk in a trade with the Boston Bruins for a second-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2016.

It was one of two trades the Islanders made just before the start of the season, acquiring Boychuk from the Bruins and defenseman Nick Leddy from the Chicago Blackhawks. The Islanders are second in the Metropolitan Division with 90 points, one behind the New York Rangers.
