Which ten Maple Leafs players or prospects would you build around?
There have been multiple media reports including one in The Globe and Mail that indicates that Brendan Shanahan has been given the green light from Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment to conduct a major overhaul of the Toronto Maple Leafs. On the Maple Leafs website, the team lists a total of 35 forwards, 15 defencemen and two goaltenders on their Roster and In the System pages. I thought it would be a fun exercise to get varying opinions of which ten of these 55 players would you build the next generation of the Maple Leafs around.

Stoney Point - February 14, 2015 - It is a snowy and windy winter day in Southwestern Ontario. As I sit here and watch the snow blow in off of Lake St. Clair, my thoughts have turned to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

By no means is this list meant to be viewed that any players are “untouchable” – as given the right offer anybody could and should be moved. Below are the ten current players that I would build around.

81 Phil Kessel - I wrote today that I think the Maple Leafs would be making a mistake in trading one of the top goal scorers in the game.

44 Morgan Rielly - This kids looks like he is going to be special and I think the Buds would regret moving this guy.

21 James Van Reimsdyk - He and Kessel have good chemistry and I see him as part of the future in Toronto.

45 Jonathan Bernier - He was a good pick-up by the Leafs and will solidify the goaltending spot for years to come.

3 Dion Phaneuf - I know that I may be in the minority on this one, but I like Dion.

43 Nazem Kadri - While I have written in the past that I would trade Kadri, he made my list of ten today. Who knows, maybe he is the right guy to centre Kessel and JVR.

25 Mike Santorelli - I think he was the Maple Leafs best off-season acquisition and has been a pleasant surprise for the team this year. Sign him and keep him around.

46 Roman Polak - I wrestled with putting Jake Gardiner in this spot, but I think he and Cody Franson could get moved as part of the rebuild. Polak stays.

62 William Nylander - Too early to dump this prospect, unless the right price comes along. Time will tell if his development matches the hype. It seems to make sense that he is part of the rebuild.

78 Connor Brown - Leading scorer with the Marlies, high scorer in the OHL with Connor McDavid. Call it a hunch, but Connor stays.

I know many will not agree with my list of ten – but that is okay. In fact, if you are still reading down this far in the article, I would invite you to share your ten with the HometownHockey.ca readers. You can post your ten below or you can submit a column of your own.

We look forward to hearing from you!
