Toronto - July 23, 2015 - Lou Lamoriello resigned as president of the New Jersey Devils on Thursday in order to become the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Lamoriello is the 16th general manager in Maple Leafs history. Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan was drafted by the Devils in 1987, the year Lamoriello took over as their president and general manager.

Lamoriello spent 28 years with the Devils, winning the Stanley Cup three times, going to the Stanley Cup Final five times, and winning nine division titles. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.

Lamoriello resigned as the Devils general manager on May 4. Ray Shero took over for him.

"Lou Lamoriello created and defined what it meant to be a New Jersey Devil," Devils co-owner Josh Harris said in a statement released by the team. "His brilliance in shaping this franchise into one of the most storied and celebrated organizations in sport will make him a New Jersey Devil for life. He represented this organization, our current and former players, the state of New Jersey, and the greatest fans in the National Hockey League in a manner that exemplified character, class, and dignity."
