Crysler - Jun. 29, 2011 - Strawberry picking season opened June 15th and the owners of Cannamore Orchard in Crysler are hoping it remains open until July 10th. During strawberry season, Cannamore will be open 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, seven days a week, however if it looks like rain you are best phone ahead (613-448-3633) to see if it is raining in Crysler.

Cannamore Orchard finds it roots going all the way back to 1982, when Dennis Taylor and his family planted their first 500 apple trees. Since that time, another 1,400 trees have been planted, a storefront built, they have added wagon rides and a family activity area. In 1992, the Taylors branched into agri-tourism with the addition of the Spooky Wagon Rides in the fall. They began selling strawberries in 1995 and the Orchard has grown to become a popular spot for school, day care, nursery, and senior tours.

If you haven’t been to Cannamore Orchard yet, you really should plan a trip out during strawberry season. This will be a great way to learn more about what Cannamore has to offer and pick some great tasting strawberries at the same time. It is an activity the whole family can enjoy, as supervised children are more than welcome.

The cost to pick strawberries is very reasonable. “Pick your own” strawberries sell for $1.59 per pound or $3.50 per kilo. Pre-picked berries are $13.00 for a 4L basket.

When asked about the top three tips you can give a strawberry picking newbie, Taylor had this to say, “Bring a hat. Bring water. Bring your own containers to save on buying containers.”

”Berries are quite plentiful right now as well as very sweet. Every year, we hold a special for Canada Day weekend and this year it is pick four containers of strawberries and you only pay for three containers. The fourth one is FREE,” added Taylor.

If you want to phone ahead to reserve some already picked berries, then do so by calling 613-448-3633 - best to phone day ahead so they will have them picked.
