One of the Faces of Autism
Autism Awareness week kicks off today, March 27th with Light It Blue fast approaching on April 2nd. Autism affects information processing in the brain and how this occurs is not well understood. I love the saying out there that autism isn’t an operating error, it’s a different operating system. Autism has been prevalent in the news the last couple of years with some inspirational and some heart wrenching stories.

Stoney Point - March 27, 2015 - Autism Awareness week kicks off today, March 27th with Light It Blue fast approaching on April 2nd. Autism affects information processing in the brain and how this occurs is not well understood. I love the saying out there that "autism isn’t an operating error … it’s a different operating system.” Autism has been prevalent in the news the last couple of years with some inspirational and some heart wrenching stories.

I’m always worried about our son Tristan’s future. While his school experience was exceptional, I’m concerned about the school system in general where support for teachers is greatly lacking. They are not trained in BMS - Behaviour Management Systems. That will be another article where I stand on my soapbox and state my ideas and fears in relation to the school system and funding from a province that spends a billion more each month then it takes in; so we know there’s no money -- again, another day for this spiel.

Dialogue about autism is key. We need to ensure that emergency responders are better educated about those on the spectrum. It is a spectrum so each individual is unique. If you read postings by parents with children on the spectrum you’ll see the ASD community shares many of the trials and tribulations we experience and many shared behaviours. Arming emergency responders with knowledge helps diffuse situations. So now I’m picturing a police officer with his handcuffs, gun and a pocketful of reinforcers … a car, stickers, pack of smarties, comic book - you get the idea and this picture makes me laugh. BUT we know an understanding of ABA/IBI/PRT is necessary for responders and everyone (responders, educators, service groups and parents) need to make sure this is implemented.

Here is a link to a previous article I wrote which highlights some key points to share with friends and kids on autism .
