Cornwall - January 1, 2012 - Team Canada finished their World Junior Championship round robin play with a 3-2 victory over Team USA. With the win, Canada’s record improves to 4-0 and they advance to the semi-finals on Tuesday in Calgary.

Once again, Ottawa Senators prospect Mark Stone lead the way for Canada with a goal and an assist. Canada came out strong and scored all of its goals in the first 16 minutes of this game and then leaned on Scott Wedgewood to carry them the rest of the way. Wedgewood made 29 saves for his second win of the tournament.

Stone opened the scoring at 5:39 of the first. Other Canadian markers came from Jaden Schwartz and Brett Connolly. Canada outshot the Americans 19-8 in the first period.

The middle frame was scoreless and the third period saw the United States score two goals to make it close. Charlie Coyle and Jason Zucker scored for Team USA. Dallas Stars prospect Jack Campbell, playing in his third straight World Junior Championship, made 32 saves in the loss.

The much anticipated New Year’s Eve game turned out to be somewhat anti-climatic as Canada had already secured first in Pool B and a bye to the semifinals heading into the game. Canada outscored its opposition 26-5 in the preliminary round.

Canada is in action next on Tuesday in the Semi-Finals when they will play the winner of the tomorrow’s Russia/Czech Republic game. The gold medal game will be played Thursday night in Calgary. Mark your calendar…both games should be exciting to watch!
