Spitfires deliver a real ouchie to Generals
It wasn’t the homecoming that Windsor business man and Oshawa Generals Owner Rocco Tullio was hoping for Thursday night. Windsor - February 9, 2017 - It wasn’t the homecoming that Windsor business man and Oshawa Generals Owner Rocco Tullio was hoping for Thursday night. The Windsor Spitfires scored a lopsided 7-1 victory over the Gens in front of 4,936 fans at the WFCU Centre.

Oshawa opened the scoring in the first period on a defensive breakdown in the Windsor zone, when Tecumseh native Jack Studnicka notched his 14th goal of the season.

It was all Windsor from this point forward. Cristiano DiGiacinto, Adam Laishram, Jeremiah Addison and Sean Day would make it 4-1 for the home squad before the teams would break for the first intermission. Aaron Luchuk, Addison and Mikhail Sergachev added tallies in the middle frame to round out the scoring.

The Spits own the league’s best penalty kill percentage and once again their PK was perfect - killing all four of the Gens’ powerplay chances. After taking a two-minute penalty for hitting from behind, Lasalle Viper call-up Maddux Rychel jumped back on the ice and made a nice pass to Sergachev for the team’s seventh short-handed goal of the season.

Addison returned to the line-up from injury tonight and produced a three point, first star effort. Defenceman Austin McEneny also returned after missing five games with a back injury. Ottawa Senators prospect Logan Brown is said to be close to returning to action after a ten game absence.

Despite tonight’s game being a cross-conference game, there were a number of Oshawa jerseys to be found in the crowd. In addition to Tullio, there continues to be a number of Windsor-Essex ties in the Gens roster. Head coach Bob Jones used to be the Spits Head Coach and still lives in the area in the off-season. Assistant coach Greg Nemisz played for the Spitfires and there are two players from Tecumseh in Joe Manchurek and Studnicka. Laslty, Eric Henderson is from Kingsville.

With the win, Windsor improves to 20-3-1-0 on home ice in Canada’s south and Oshawa falls to .500 with an 11-11-3-2 road record. Windsor will travel to Hamilton to take on the Bulldogs on Saturday and into Erie to face the Otters on Sunday. As of tonight, Erie is undefeated at home this season and has won their last eight games. The Spits are now only two points behind the West Division leading Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

The Spits look good tonight and here’s hoping Brown is back in the line-up in Erie.
