Stoney Point - November 26, 2014 - In a classy move, the Toronto Maple Leafs will honour former Head Coach Pat Quinn this evening with a jersey patch as they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in Pittsburgh. Quinn died on Monday after a lengthy illness.

On their website, the Leafs posted the following statement:

The Toronto Maple Leafs were saddened to learn of the passing of one of the NHL’s all-time great coaches, Pat Quinn.

Upon learning of Mr. Quinn’s passing, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Chairman Larry Tanenbaum said, "On behalf of the ownership, management, staff, and players of the Toronto Maple Leafs, we are all deeply saddened by the loss of Pat Quinn. Pat was an associate and good friend to so many of us. We join hockey fans around the country in offering our thoughts and prayers to his wife, Sandra, and daughters Kalli and Val."

"This is a tremendous loss for the hockey community,” said Toronto Maple Leafs President and Alternate Governor Brendan Shanahan. “Pat will be revered not only for his great accomplishments in sport but also for his courage and strength in face of his illness, and his dedication to family.”

Pat Quinn was born on January 29, 1943 in Hamilton, Ontario. Quinn was the Head Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs for seven seasons from 1998 to 2006 and had a record of 300-214-52-8 in 574 games, second on the club’s list for career wins (Punch Imlach) and in games coached (Imlach). His NHL career record stood at 657-499-14-8 (.560%) in 19 seasons. He ranks fifth on the league’s career list for games coached (1,400) and games won (684).

In addition to his duties as head coach of the Leafs, Quinn also served simultaneously as the team’s general manager from July 14, 1999 until August 29, 2003. Quinn was also a defenceman with the Leafs, appearing in 99 games the 1968-69 and 1969-70 seasons.

Internationally, Quinn was head coach of Team Canada’s 2004 entry in the World Cup of Hockey that captured the championship in Toronto. He was head coach of the 2002 Canadian Olympic Team that won Canada’s first Gold medal in 50 years of Olympic competition, and also served in that capacity at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.
