Cornwall - February 20, 2012 - The City of Cornwall has just celebrated Family Day and another successful Storm Realty Winterfest celebration. Lamoureux Park and the Cornwall Civic Complex were both alive with activity and smiling faces this past weekend!

The weekend was jammed packed with activities for area residents of all ages! There were two consecutive nights of spectacular, world-class fireworks. Festival goers had no shortage of activities to choose from including ice skating both inside or outside, maple taffy, music, entertainers, children's shows, an inflatable midway, polar bear swim, and a seniors showcaase. If that wasn’t enough there also was Face Painting, Crafts, a Winterfest Acoustic Showcase, Siberian Huskies Snowdogs team and an indoor family fun zone and an outdoor dance party.

Committee Member Rod Rivette told me on Sunday afternoon that the attendance number was already in excess of 8,000 and that was before both big firework displays. Without question, organizers have to be pleased with what has to be record crowds for the event, (which is still very much in its infancy.)

The future of Winterfest looks very promising and the organizers have laid a great foundation upon which to build upon in future years. I have heard about some of their plans and I only see growth and positive additions going forward. Having been involved in the creation and development of Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off, I know first-hand how much work goes into staging an event of this magnitude. Countless volunteers, sponsors and committee members have worked very hard to make a difference in our community!

Often times, the work of the volunteer is neither glamorous nor easy. However, many jobs need to get done and in this case many area residents stepped forward to create a wonderful event for the rest of us.

Some in this community are quick to criticize and find fault. I would encourage those nay-sayers to re-direct their energies and recognize the good work that has been put forth to date and the huge potential of this event going forward.

To the volunteer organizers of Winterfest who gave so freely of their time and spent countless hours working hard to make a difference for the residents of our region…THANK YOU!
