Cornwall - Apr. 24, 2011 - Local dancers will have a chance to hone their skills and learn from others during an upcoming dance festival in Cornwall.

Registration is now open for the 2011 Step Into Motion: Taking It To The Streets dance festival which will run from May 18 to 21 at General Vanier and St. Lawrence schools, CCVS and Aultsville Theatre.

This year’s event will feature a variety of workshops for Upper Canada District School Board students and staff members, as well as the general public.

On May 18, UCDSB elementary students are invited to attend dance workshops held during the morning at GVIS, SLIS and CCVS. Following the workshops, students will take part in matinee and evening performances at GVIS.

May 19 follows a similar format, but the day will be directed toward intermediate and secondary school students.

Dancers, along with their families and friends, are invited to attend an evening gala on May 20 at the Aultsville Theatre which will showcase performances by professional dancers and dance crews such as Blueprint Cru, Culture Shock, Kaeja, 4EverFresh, Body Rocks, Moon Runners, Studio Sweatshop, Klaxon, Cadence Dance Co., Christine Dubois and Canterbury High School, Team Rhythm Works/Stomp, and the prestigious Powell School of Dance.

On May 21, the general public will have the opportunity to attend workshops at GVIS by many of the professional dancers who performed the evening before. In addition, a salsa workshop for adults will be offered by Dance Conmigo, and a workshop about dance and the new curriculum will be offered to teachers by the Council of Ontario Drama and Dance Educators.

“The purpose of the festival is to encourage dance throughout eastern Ontario,” says festival founder and coordinator Gisele Paquette.

“This event is a great opportunity for local dancers to learn new skills, as well as meet professional dancers from Cornwall and beyond.”

A variety of ticket and package options are available. For more information, please visit the Step Into Motion website or call Cornwall and Seaway Valley Tourism at 613-938-4748. Tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis, though priority will be given to dancers and studio participants.
