Cornwall - May. 3, 2011 - With the arrival of the cycling season, Cornwall police are reminding motorists to be on the lookout for cyclists.

For their part, cycling enthusiasts should also make a point of following the rules of the road.

"Cycling is a fun, healthy and an inexpensive way to get around, but cycling can be hazardous, unless your bicycle handling and traffic skills are in good shape," reads a news release from the police service.

Bicycles are classified as vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act, which means cyclists must obey the traffic laws just like any other vehicle on the road.

Among other things, cyclists must stop for red lights and stop signs and ride in the proper direction on one-way streets.

This year, Cornwall police is giving residents a chance to register their bicycles online for free. The idea is to have the name and address of the owner on file so that a bicycle may be returned to its rightful owner should it be lost, stolen or left abandoned. Those interested in registering their bikes can do so through the Cornwall police website.
