Cornwall - Jul. 19, 2011 - This summer, over 105 youth from high-needs neighbourhoods in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry are getting the chance to gain valuable job experience.

The jobs are being offered through the Youth Opportunities Strategy, which helps at-risk youth gain experience with local businesses, non-profit agencies and police services.

The young people in these jobs will receive training from Glengarry Inter-Agency Group – Glengarry Liaison and Job Zone d’emploi and a six to seven-week summer placement.

These jobs help youth build confidence and learn new skills they can use in and out of the workplace, and may also help them gain future employment.

This program is part of the McGuinty government’s plan to reduce poverty, stimulate economic growth and build strong communities by helping all kids reach their full potential.

“Getting that all-important first summer job is critical. We’re helping young people across the province so they can gain valuable work experience, building their resumes and increasing their self-confidence,” said Laurel Broten, Minister of Children and Youth Services.

“These new summer positions will be a huge benefit to our local youth. Summer employment is an important stepping stone in preparation for future career paths, as youth acquire specific training, support, and advice to help them thrive,” said Jim Brownell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry.
