Cornwall - Apr. 13, 2011 - Cornwall residents are urged to show their community pride by taking part in the Spring Clean-Up Challenge from April 16 to 26.

Friends, families and co-workers are encouraged to join together and help clean up their neighbourhoods.

“It is important that we keep our city clean from both a safety and long-term environmental stewardship point of view,” said Mayor Bob Kilger in a news release.

“I would urge all citizens to take a few moments and help Cornwall look its best for both residents and visitors alike.”

As the winter snow melts, debris and litter that have collected during the winter months are exposed.

Each year, the City organizes a city-wide clean-up effort to address this issue.

In previous years, there have been a number of community groups and individuals who have pitched in to clean up problem spots, such as vacant lots, road boulevards, ditches and waterfront areas.

Individuals and groups must register online on the city’s website for a chance to win prizes.

Residents participating in clean-up efforts can use their weekly garbage collection day to dispose of collected garbage, or they can bring collected garbage and recyclables to the Civic Complex on April 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

City staff will be giving away free spruce trees (limited quantities) to participants and a number of community groups will also be on hand:
· Agape Centre
· Cornwall and District Horticultural Society
· Benson’s BBQ
· Raisin Region Conservation Authority

The Spring Clean-Up Challenge continues until April 26 and encompasses Earth Day on April 22.

Those interested in registering a team can do so by visiting the city's website.
