Cornwall - Jun. 16, 2011 - Chateau Cornwall Retirement Residence and Chateau Gardens Lancaster Long Term Care Residence partnered today to present the fifth annual Chartwell REIT Senior Star Competition.

The event was held in front of a full house at the popular Cornwall retirement residence. Senior Star is Canada’s largest talent competition dedicated to seniors. Now in its fifth year, this singing and musical instrument competition is open to anyone 65 years and over and who is a Canadian resident.

“Chartwell’s Senior Star has grown to be the largest celebration of seniors’ talent in Canada,” announced Brent Binions, President and CEO of Chartwell Seniors Housing REIT. “We are proud to support the incredible talent of Canadian seniors and continue to be amazed and entertained year after year by the caliber of performers who participate.”

First prize was awarded to Edward Hughes who did a great job with a Frank Sinatra tune. Second place went to John Dawson and Georgina Sharp placed third. Today, there were ten very talented seniors who took the stage.

A panel of three judges, made up of City Councillor David Murphy, Police Chief Dan Parkinson, and Hosptial Foundation Executive Director Connie Vardy chose the top three local contestants, each of whom were recognized with a Senior Star trophy.

Master of Ceremony duties were capably handled by Sgt. Thom Racine of the Cornwall Community Police Service.

Videos of the first and second place winners from across Canada are now submitted to a celebrity panel of judges including Dan Clancy, Tim Louis and Gordie Tapp who will narrow the list to nine competitors invited to compete in the Senior Star National Final.

The National Final will be held in Niagara Falls on Monday, November 28th, 2011.
