Cornwall - Aug. 27, 2011 - It’s that time of year again , when the children and teenagers will be heading back to school. The Cornwall Community Police Service is looking for your help in making the return to school a safe outing for our children. We are requesting that all motorists keep a watchful eye on the children as they head off to school.

After a two month absence drivers will start to see school crossing guards and school buses back on our roadways starting August 29th, 2011. Please respect the stop signs as fines apply. A motorist who fails to obey school crossing stop sign can be fined $180.00 and accumulate 3 demerit points. A motorist who fails to stop for school bus can be fined $490.00 and accumulate 6 demerit points. A motorist who is found speeding in a Community Safety Zone will be subject to a higher fine.

With this in mind the Cornwall Community Police Service will be taking an aggressive approach with a “zero tolerance level” on the enforcement of these types of violations. School bus operators will be carrying School Bus Violation Forms that will be completed and turned over to police for investigation when they observe a motorist not stopping for a school bus. This form contains details of the offence such as, licence number of the offending vehicle, location, date & time of the offence and description of the driver. Each of these forms submitted will be fully investigated and charges laid when applicable.

We would like to remind all motorist to pay special attention to children on their way to and from school. Be alert and be prepared to stop for school crossing guards and school buses.

The Cornwall Community Police Service wishes our children a Happy and Safe return to school and we are committed to our vision: “A Safer Cornwall, reducing crime always”.
