Cornwall - Sep. 19, 2011 - It is hard to believe it has happened so quickly. OurHometown.ca was launched on January 27th and in less than eight months our site has risen to the top! Alexa now ranks us as the number one online media site in Cornwall and SD&G!

Today, our Alexa ranking is 2,082 in Canada. The lower your Alexa number, the better your ranking is. Our site is followed in the top five by CornwallFreeNews.com (2,106), Standard Freeholder (3,378), The Cornwall Daily (4,846) and The Local Seeker (8,777). A complete listing of the top ten local sites can be found below.

Alexa numbers fluctuate daily, so we are not sure how long we will stay number one, however today we are going to celebrate our current top ranking. Each month our traffic continues to grow so we are confident that our Alexa ranking will continue to improve as well. Proof positive is the fact that over the first 17 days of September we are on pace to show 24% growth over our best month of August.

We are on pace to see a total of 36,533 visitors and 106,714 page views for the month of September. A heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to the thousands of you who have made our site one of your regular online destinations.

NEWS AGGREGATION
The success of OurHometown.ca has been discounted by some - who have stated that a vast majority of our traffic comes from aggregation. That claim is simply not true.

OurHometown.ca is a powerful news aggregator site and throughout its’ pages you will find 2,490 links to news headlines, sports, business, lifestyle stories and more. The reason OurHometown.ca includes aggregation on its' site is because it provides a good cross-section of information and reduces the time and effort needed to regularly check other websites. It is a service to our readers.

Our site grows every day and currently contains a total of 1,651 pages of which only 12 pages (less than 1%) contain any aggregated links. If a user Googles a certain topic, Google will take them directly to the site where the story is hosted and not to OurHometown.ca. As such, our traffic is generated solely by the content we provide and host.

The other thing to consider is that unlike a number of other local sites, OurHometown.ca does not allow readers to make anonymous postings on its site. This was a conscience decision made by the OH founders and as such none of our traffic is driven by readers who use the site as an online community chat room.

THANK YOU!
We work hard at OurHometown.ca but we are still taken aback by the speed at which our site continues to grow. We have exceeded our expectations and goals for the eight-month mark and we anticipate continued growth over the coming months. We are grateful to our readers, advertisers and contributors for their support and belief in the need for a site such as ours. We will continue to work hard to earn your support and regular visits and hope that you will tell a number of your friends, family, neighbours and co-workers about OurHometown.ca.

Thank you Cornwall, and S,D&G!
