Brockville - Oct. 27, 2011 - The Regular Board Meeting of the Upper Canada District School Board was held tonight and several issues were dealt with including:

Presentation of the Director's Extra Mile Award
The Director's Extra Mile Award Program was created in the fall of 2004. It was initiated by Director of Education David K. Thomas as a way to recognize staff and students who have performed in an exemplary fashion in the service of the Upper Canada District School Board and public education.

Recipients are nominated by our school principals and other board leaders, and nominations are evaluated by the Director, who makes the final decision on granting the award. Winners become members of the Director's Extra Mile Club and receive a decorative silver bell in honour of their achievement. They are also acknowledged with an Extra Mile Club framed award, which is displayed in the hallway or front foyer of the UCDSB administrative office in Brockville.

Tonight the award was present to Thousand Islands Secondary School students Brandon Timmerman and Kaylee Villeneuve who were key organizers of The Pride Walk this past summer in Brockville to encourage acceptance of people of all sexual orientations.

Director Thomas commented: "Brandon and Kaylee, I thank you for bringing change to your school and eastern Ontario and I thank you for your leadership. You have encouraged us to celebrate our differences and to move beyond tolerance to acceptance."

Report from the Committee of the Whole
Trustees approved the following three motions that were brought forward from the Board's Oct. 12th Committee of the Whole meeting:

1. That the Board approve Policy 453 - Assessment and Evaluation.
2. That the Board direct administration to develop a strategy to implement the spirit of Policy and Program Memorandum 150 and to provide an initial report on this strategy in 90 days.
3. That the Board direct administration to work with contractors to ensure there are no cafeteria closures within the 2011/2012 school year.
