Cornwall - August 21, 2012 - Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell will be heading to Toronto two weeks earlier than originally planned following the House being recalled to deal with teacher’s compensation legislation. Details of the upcoming Bill have now been posted on the Ministry of Education website.

Jim McDonell commented: “I was expecting this recall, and look forward to standing with the PC Caucus to demand a wage freeze across the whole public sector. With the Province staring a $411 billion debt load in the face, we must take action to reduce the size and cost of government.”

Earlier this month, despite the Premier’s claims of exercising fiscal restraint, public sector managers were handed $36 million in bonus pay through a loophole in the Public Sector Compensation Restraint to Protect Public Services Act, 2010.

The local MPP is disappointed with the way the McGuinty government handled the situation. “We want to see our children in school come September. Had the Government held a consistent position and engaged in a frank face-to-face conversation with teachers, this situation could have been avoided. We will examine the Bill closely, but the Government’s current approach is unlikely to work.”

McDonell concluded: “With almost 4,000 collective agreements, is McGuinty really planning on addressing them one by one? It just doesn't make sense and highlights his lack of a strategic plan and leadership.”
