Cornwall - January 29, 2012 - The River Institute’s ongoing workshop series at the OPG Visitor Centre continues in February with two afternoons of activity and education suitable for the whole family. Workshops take place at 12 noon, 1 pm, 2pm and 3 pm. and are free of charge. Registration takes place upon arrival at the Visitor Centre, 2500B 2nd St. West.

Friday, February 3: BIRDS

What happens to birds in the winter? How far do migrating species travel, and how do birds adapt here during the cold season? In this program, you’ll get a chance to see a variety of birds -either preserved specimens and/or live birds outside near the visitor centre - and discuss their identifying features and behaviours. You’ll also learn tips on how you can help the local bird community.

Saturday, February 11: WINTER IN THE WILD

During the cold winter months, many plants and animals disappear only to be seen again in spring. Come learn how plants and animals survive our harsh Canadian winters. You’ll learn about migration, hibernation, freezing and many more methods of survival.

The OPG Visitor Centre also offers displays and interactive exhibits that describe the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project construction story and its effects on nearby communities. Visitors can learn and observe how OPG safely generates electricity at its nuclear, thermal and hydro generating stations located across Ontario. Visit www.opg.com/stlawrencevisitorcentre for details, or call 613-932-4563 ext. 3523.

Workshops take place throughout the year and are delivered by educators from the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences. Programs are free of charge, and appropriate for all ages. For dates and details, visit www.riverinstitute.ca.
