Finch - February 5, 2012 - A conservation group dedicated to mentoring young hunters in safety and waterfowl habitat enhancement will present its fourth annual fundraising dinner and auction at Finch Community Centre March 3.

Co-sponsored by South Nation Conservation, tickets are now available for the Delta Waterfowl banquet, with items such as shotguns, rifles, and decoys up for grabs in raffles as well as live and silent auctions.

Beginning with a social time at 5 pm followed by dinner at 6:30 pm, tickets are $35 for youth, $45 for adults, and $65 a couple, with seating limited to about 150 people. In addition to a beef brisket dinner with all the trimmings, each ticket purchaser gets a one-year membership in Delta Waterfowl and six issues of its magazine.

Participants are asked to bring a non-perishable item for the food bank which will be rewarded with a raffle ticket for a print donated by SNC.

Delta Waterfowl is a North America-wide organization dedicated to informed, controlled hunting and to conserving wetlands for breeding. It aims to provide "knowledge, future leaders, solutions and passion for waterfowl to scientists, resource managers, waterfowlers, conservationists and the public."

The local chapter now has 30 members spread across SNC's 4,000 square-km watershed; new members are always welcome.

"One of the great things about a local chapter is that it can direct 25 per cent of event proceeds," said banquet organizer and SNC staffer Ryan Robson. "Eligible programs include mentored youth hunts, youth waterfowling training seminars, and local nesting projects."

The South Nation Delta chapter pays for youth aged 12-15 to get their apprentice hunting licenses after they've been put through a multi-faceted training course.

SNC General Manager Dennis O'Grady said partnership with Delta Waterfowl has proved to be rewarding for both parties.

"Essentially, both organizations are dedicated to the same cause, environmental protection and habitat enhancement," O'Grady explained. "Hunting is going to happen, so it's best to ensure hunters become responsible and environmentally aware at a young age."
