South Stormont Selects Skate to Help
When the South Stormont Selects Atom B minor hockey team received some disheartening news - that one of the mothers in their close-knit 'hockey family' had been diagnosed with Plasma Cell Leukemia - the team was galvanized into action.

Long Sault - March 24, 2012 - When the South Stormont Selects Atom B minor hockey team received some disheartening news - that one of the mothers in their close-knit 'hockey family' had been diagnosed with Plasma Cell Leukemia - the team was galvanized into action.

Plans for hosting their own 'home tournament', slated to be held at the Long Sault Arena on March 25, 2012, quickly took on added dimension and meaning. Organizers not only had to plan for all the regular tournament day activities such as a chili and sandwich luncheon, a large 50/50 draw, a chuck-a-puck contest, as well as the customary bonanza of the 'prize table' among other activities, but they also adopted plans to make the tournament more than just a day of fun for the kids.

“Our hockey family was crushed to hear this devastating news,” says head Coach Gilles Latour. “The hockey community is a tight knit family, we may play on different teams but we are all part of the same ‘hockey team’. We are inviting the community to come and join us on Sunday to help us raise funds for this very special family.”

The team’s pre-tournament lead-up to the day of fundraising efforts also includes a raffle for an Ottawa Senators themed prize package - comprised of two 100-level tickets to an Ottawa Senators, a night’s accommodation at The Westin Ottawa, dinner for two at Tucker’s marketplace restaurant on the Byward Market, and a child-sized Senators jersey signed by hometown Senator favourite Jesse Winchester. Tickets are priced at only $1 each, and will be available for purchase through the team, up until and including the draw date of March 25th, when the winner will be drawn at the tournament at Long Sault Arena.

The six-team tournament-day fundraising plans also include a Silent Auction table with some fantastic prizes - only a few of which include two more 100-level tickets a Senators home game, signed Jesse Winchester kid’s jersey, a gift basket from local realtor Storm Realty, a granite etching from Crowder Monuments of Morrisburg, and a 2012-2013 hockey season registration courtesy of the South Stormont Minor Hockey Association and much more.

The South Stormont Atom B tournament kicks off on Sunday March 25 at 10:30 am with tickets for the Ottawa Senators prize package available for sale throughout the day until the time of the draw. The bidding for items on the Silent Auction table commences at 10:30 am and also continues throughout the day.

To date, tournament organizers have been humbled by the amount of community support shown by both local businesses and private donors who continue to contribute to the plethora of prizes for the Silent Auction.
