Universal Child Care Benefit retro payments to boost economy

Jul. 21, 2015: Guy Lauzon, Member of Parliament, celebrated the first installment of the Harper Government’s boosted Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) today. The newly increased child care benefit pays almost $2000 every year for each child under 6 and $720 for each child aged 6 through 17. With a retroactive payment from January 1, 2015, the Harper Government transferred almost $3 billion to 3.8 million families today—the largest single-day direct payment to families in history. Old Age Security Act and Canada Pension Plan Scams

Mar. 18, 2015: One of my Caucus colleagues started a recent blog post wisely using the famous Winston Churchill quote: “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on”. Every few weeks, my office receives emails and phone calls from constituents who have heard about “Bill C-428”, a Liberal Private Members Bill to amend the Old Age Security Act to reduce the residency requirement and allow newcomers to receive OAS after just 3 years in Canada. Summer Recess as the Member of Parliament for SDSG

Aug. 12, 2013: Parliament rose for the summer break at the end of June and the so called "barbecue season" began. I am still not sure what is meant by this term but, I can tell you I have been out and about since the beginning of July and the only BBQ I attended was our own SDSG Constituency Picnic. I have attended events throughout the riding including seven Canada Day celebrations, the Highland Games, numerous Fairs, sports tournaments, and many other events. FULL STORY

Justin Trudeau's Policy Priority - Legalizing Marijuana

Aug. 6, 2013: Given the content of Justin Trudeau's first policy announcement, I feel I must comment. Last week Justin Trudeau, the Leader of the Liberal Party, made his first policy announcement that marijuana should be legalized in Canada. When reporters asked if he was in favour of decriminalizing marijuana Trudeau said "I am actually not in favour of decriminalizing cannabis. I am in favour of legalizing it". FULL STORY

A number of Ministers maintained their portfolios - Jim Flaherty (Finance), John Baird (Foreign Affairs), Ed Fast (International Trade), Tony Clement (Treasury Board) and Alice Wong (Seniors) to name a few. What was striking in this Cabinet shuffle were the additions of some very talented Members of Parliament from the most recent classes of 2008 and 2011. FULL STORY

Many Canadian seniors are benefiting from worldwide advances in health, fitness and science, and as a result they are living longer, healthier lives. One senior observed eighty years old is the new sixty years old. FULL STORY
