Only first game of Red Wings' season, but it was pretty terrible

Jan. 20, 2013: It’s only the first game of the Detroit Red Wings season, but it was pretty terrible. It’s far too early to panic, but color me concerned. In a season this short, they can’t afford not to show up every night. They need to move onward and upward from this or it will be a long season despite being a short one. FULL STORY

Detroit will take a definite hit in the absence of NHL hockey crowds

Sep. 27, 2012: A city like Detroit is one example of a specific area that will take a definite hit in the absence of a crowd hitting the town for an NHL hockey game, even with its improvements in terms of entertainment downtown in recent years. The NHL Lockout will hurt Detroit's economy. FULL STORY

NHL Rumor - Detroit Red Wings interested in Jay Bouwmeester

Aug. 9, 2012: The Detroit Red Wings are pursuing Flames defenceman Jay Bouwmeester. So reports Brendan Savage, who has it from a team source. Not exactly the kind of guy I’d be thrilled to see the team paying $6.68 million, but so the market goes. This qualifies as exciting news here in the dog days of the NHL offseason. FULL STORY

Red Wings miss out on everybody

Jul. 27, 2012: Yesterday, Alexander Semin signed a one year, $7 million deal with Carolina, dealing the Wings yet another free agent loss. Except they never really wanted him, so that’s debatable. Can you lose a fight for a guy you didn’t want? I guess it’s a loss if you were a fan clinging to the thought of Alexander Semin coasting in Red and White. FULL STORY

Flyers Offer Sheet Weber out from under the Red Wings’ nose

Jul. 19, 2012: Huge news broke around 1:00 AM last night: the Flyers got Shea Weber to sign a 14-year offer sheet worth upwards of $100 million. Just below that in the "huge news" category is that the Predators had been in trade talks with a group of teams that included the Detroit Red Wings. The Flyers just got tired of waiting, apparently. Red Wings make Howson an offer he could refuse

Jul. 18, 2012: An excitable source that says the Detroit Red Wings made a "hell of an offer" to Columbus for Rick Nash. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your point of view), Jackets GM Scott Howson turned it down without so much as a counter offer. The obvious conclusion is that Howson’s simply not interested in dealing with a fellow Central Division team. FULL STORY

On the Red Wings losing Holmstrom

Jul. 12, 2012: One of the unfortunate downsides to the Wings’ surplus up front the past couple years has been seeing guys like Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper forced into retirement, whether personally ready or not. This year, it’s Tomas Holmstrom who is being pushed out by guys with illustrious names like Cory Emmerton and Jan Mursak. FULL STORY
