Unscientific Study – Top Ten most popular NHL teams
I began searching the internet for a list of the Top Ten most popular NHL teams. As expected, the topic is pretty subjective so it was hard to find an absolute answer. For fun, I took a look at the number of posts by team on the popular HFBoards.com and also the number of Twitter followers for each team. This exercise is not meant to be a scientific study, simply a fun way to rank the top ten. Not surprisingly, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens are fighting it out for the NHL’s most popular team.

Stoney Point - August 8, 2013 - I have always found it interesting to see what stories and teams attract the most attention on OurHometown.ca and HometownHockey.ca. We are fortunate to have a great writer in Rob Soria who provides regular, high-quality content about the Edmonton Oilers. Couple his material with a large fan base in Oil Country and it is no surprise that the Oiler content does really well.

Further, our Toronto Maple Leafs stories always attract many readers – particularly in recent months when they have contained the word “Luongo”. It is often said that Toronto is the centre of the sports universe and like Edmonton, there are many proud members of Leafs Nation. Thank you to Tim Cornett and Steve Minakakis.

Another team that is worth mentioning in this article is the Montreal Canadiens. Despite at least half of the market preferring to source out French content, our coverage of the Habs is also very popular with our visitors. Thank you to Dean Eastman and Mitch Melnick.

My interest was peaked and I began searching the internet for a list of the Top Ten most popular NHL teams. As expected, the topic is pretty subjective so it was hard to find an absolute answer. For fun, I took a look at the number of posts by team on the popular HFBoards.com and also the number of Twitter followers for each team. This exercise is not meant to be a scientific study, simply a fun way to rank the top ten (based on this criteria), which is as follows:

1) Toronto Maple Leafs – 3,619,124 (3,245,188, 373,936)
2) Montreal Canadiens – 3,549,721 (3,116,491, 433,320)
3) Boston Bruins – 3,007,249 (2,587,642, 419,607)
4) Edmonton Oilers – 2,512,381 (2,280,831, 231,550)
5) New York Rangers – 2,261,864 (2,012,144, 249,750)
6) Vancouver Canucks – 2,145,078 (1,739,981, 405,097)
7) New Jersey Devils – 2,039,052 (1,889,466, 149,587)
8) Pittsburgh Penguins – 1,852,269 (1,442,207, 410,062)
9) Ottawa Senators – 1,663,692 (1,514,955, 148,737)
10) Philadelphia Flyers – 1,528,785 (1,257,224, 271,561)

*** Team - Total (HF Board post, Twitter Followers)

Honorable mentions go to the Buffalo Sabres (999,321 HF), Chicago Blackhawks (423,062 Twitter) and Detroit Red Wings (322,074 Twitter) .

Not surprisingly, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens are fighting it out for the NHL’s most popular team. Canadian teams Edmonton, Vancouver and Ottawa all had strong showings.

Confession time - Our three year old son had a restless night and that had us up most of the night, so I had some time on my hands in the wee hours this morning!

Lastly, we are looking to grow our coverage of the NHL and CHL. If you are currently blogging about your favourite team or would like to explore the possibility of creating a regular column on HometownHockey.ca, please CONTACT US to discuss the idea further.
