Jarry carries Oil Kings to huge win over Giants

Edmonton - November 6, 2013 - The Edmonton Oil Kings may not have had their best game of the season Tuesday night in Vancouver, but Tristan Jarry did.

Jarry was outstanding making 37 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Oil Kings (10-7-0-1) downed the Vancouver Giants 3-0 for the team’s first ever win at Pacific Coliseum.

“I thought he was outstanding,” said Oil Kings Head Coach Derek Laxdal. “We got up in the first 10 minutes and then we kind of went to sleep a little bit, and I thought he did a great job of holding the fort for us. He stole one for us here tonight. They pushed pretty hard in the second period, and in the third he was there when called up and he made the big save for us.”

The Oil Kings were outshot 37-27, but Jarry came up with key saves on all the Vancouver chances to hold them off the scoreboard, continuing his dominance over the Giants that extends back to last season when he allowed them just one goal over two games.

Jarry now has a 2.22 goals-against average and .916 save percentage on the season, good for third and seventh in the WHL, respectively. His 10 wins are tied for second in the league and his two shutouts tied for first.

“He’s been playing very well for the last few weeks,” Laxdal said. “I think we’re seeing what we expected (at the start of the year).

Cody Corbett opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season 7:13 into the first period, once again making him tops amongst WHL defencemen in goals despite missing seven games with a lower-body injury. Corbett also had an assist, giving him four points in two games since returning to the lineup and extending his point-streak to four games, all of them multi-point efforts.

“He’s a big part of our back end. He’s a point producer for us, plays heavy minutes with Griff and plays in all key situations,” Laxdal said. “He’s been very confident here lately and obviously he’s played very well. He’s getting the time to shine a little bit now, and he’s done a lot of good things for us. What’s important for him is to continue to layer his game.”

Aaron Irving and Curtis Lazar picked up the other goals for the Oil Kings, who improved to 4-1-0-0 on their stretch of eight straight road games.

“I did think that it was a little scrambly. I didn’t think we gained a lot of traction. It wasn’t one of our best games--I thought we played better in Calgary--but at the end of the day we’ll take the two points,” Laxdal said. “It’s a tough place to play. We got a couple of scoring chances and took advantage of them when they came along.”

Neither team could connect on the power play, with Edmonton going 0-5 and Vancouver 0-4, while Payton Lee made 24 saves in a losing effort for Vancouver.

The Oil Kings will be back in action Wednesday night as the visit the Victoria Royals.
