The success of the Cornwall Fantasy Hockey League, lead to the birth of Murph's Fantasy Hockey League in 2003 and the Windsor Fantasy Hockey League in 2013. During each Olympic year, my Dad conducted an Olympic Hockey Pool, to make watching the games even more fun. We hope you will join we hope us for our 2014 Olympics Hockey Pool from Sochi Russia.
Stoney Point - February 8, 2014 - In the summer of 1995, my Dad was looking for a hobby to occupy his idle time. Two of his passions were working on his computer and watching hockey. Based on that, starting a Fantasy Hockey pool seemed like a great idea and the Cornwall Fantasy Hockey League was born.
The early days of our Fantasy pool pre-dated the widespread use of the internet and that resulted in some pretty archaic practices. Dad used to walk to the corner store every Tuesday to pick up the Ottawa Citizen so that he could update the stats. Stats were kept in a Quattro spreadsheet and results were shared via the telephone. Fantasy owners used to have to call in their line-ups every Monday night before 7:00, so Mom always knew that dinner would be late that night.
Our pool has come a long way since those days. You can see our current website at CornwallFantasyHockey.com. Our pool started with eight teams, grew to ten, then twelve and now sits at 24 teams. The success of the pool lead to the birth of Murph's Fantasy Hockey League in 2003 and the Windsor Fantasy Hockey League in 2013. During each Olympic year, Dad, aka Ronzo, conducted an Olympic Hockey Pool, to make watching the games even more fun.
Dad lived for our Fantasy, Olympic and playoff pools. He was our stats guru and a good friend.
When Ronzo passed away suddenly in 2008, I was faced with the dilemma of shutting down the pool or taking it over myself. With the help of David Murphy, Mark Des Cotes and the patience of our Fantasy GM’s, our pool is going strong in its 18th season!
Technology has evolved and our site is a little slicker, but the foundation of our pool that was built by Ronzo remains true today and we hope you will join us in our 2014 Olympics Pool.
Entry fee is only $20.00 and the prize break down is 50% of total pot for first, 25% for second, 15% for third and 10% for fourth. Deadline for submission is 7:00 pm on Tuesday February 11, 2014.
Feel free to forward it to a friend, family member or colleague. The more the merrier! We have seen some offices make side bets on the final standings.
Go Canada Go, and thanks Ronzo!
