Generals’ 6 - 5 Win in Double Overtime Seals Steelheads’ Fate
Oshawa Generals’ forward Josh Sterk scored the game winning goal at 11:23 of the second overtime period over the Mississauga Steelheads to put the Generals in a commanding 3-0 OHL first round series lead. The Generals can close out the series in Game 4 in Mississauga on Thursday night.

Mississauga - March 25, 2014 - It was a must win Game 3 for the Mississauga Steelheads on Tuesday night. Heading into the third period with a 3-2 lead over the Oshawa Generals in Game 3, Lady Luck seemed to be on the Steelheads’ side. Mississauga sported a 15-0-0-2 record when leading after 2 periods of play in the OHL regular season. This however, is not the regular season.

The Gennies scored three goals in just 3:50 minutes of play to begin the third period, putting Oshawa in an extremely comfortable position with a 5-3 lead. As Mississauga was the lowest scoring team in the 2013-14 OHL Regular Season, many of the Oshawa faithful that travelled down the 401 to the Hershey Centre were celebrating in the aisles with an expected soon-to-be victory by the Gens.

There must have been a full moon on Tuesday evening as the Steelheads’ swam back to score two goals in the final ten minutes, tying the contest at 5 goals apiece, pushing Game 3 into overtime. After a spirited 20 minutes of overtime with both teams battling all over the ice, the game was further extended to a second overtime period.

The battle continued midway into double overtime when Oshawa’s own Josh Sterk completed a one-timer from teammate Smoskowitz netting the puck behind the Steelheads’ netminder, Spencer Martin. Martin faced 64 Oshawa shots in Game 3, compared to only 33 shots by the Gennies’ Daniel Altshuller.

Oshawa Generals’ captain Josh Brown dressed and played in Game 3. He finished the game plus+3, with 11-minutes in penalties which included one short fight against the Steelheads’ Damian Bourne.

Oshawa, who has been lethal on the power play in the first two games of this series was relatively quiet in Game 3, going 1-for-5 on the man advantage.

The Mississauga Steelheads showed plenty of jump in the early going in Game 3. The Steelheads’ have been a formidable opponent thus far against the Gennies. It is hard to imagine how this Steelheads team could possibly climb its way back to a first-round series win over the top-ranked Oshawa Generals.

Mississauga’s own Sam Babintsev scored just 12 goals in the regular season, registered a natural hat trick for his team, including the tying goal with 1:30 remaining in regulation.

For the love of the game, I remain, Dean Eastman.
