Wilkes-Barre Scranton - May 26, 2014 - Game one of the Eastern Conference Finals kicked off tonight up in St. Johns with the WBS Penguins taking on the St. John’s IceCaps The WBS penguins get on the board first tonight as Brian Gibbons gets a nice pass to Chuck Kobasew who puts it past Michael Hutchinson 1-0 Penguins. The IceCaps would even things up just over 6 minutes later.
The end of the first period after some great chances it was all even at one each. Bredan Mikkleson would get called for cross-checking at 18:21 pitting the IceCaps on a late power play, but the period would end that way.
IceCaps start the second on the power play for 21 bit do nothing with it Then the red hot Conor Sheary puts it on net gets his own rebound and puts it home giving WBS the lead now 2-1.
WBS gets a power play just after the Sheary goal but can do nothing with it. IceCaps capitalize on a Simon Despres turnover Eric O’Dell comes in on Peter Mannino looking to even it up but he slams the door. Tom Kostopoulos would make it a 3-1 game scoring later ing the second period giving the Penguins a little breathing room.
The second period would finish the Pens up 3-1 but Brian Gibbons would get whistled for interference with only 4.6 second left giving the IceCaps a carry over power play to start the third.
The carry over power play doesn’t help the IceCaps, but 5:31 into the third Andrew Gordon brought the IceCaps within one goal of the Penguins giving his team some momentum as the Penguins dug in. With just 7:20 to play Chuck Kobasew and Patrice Cormier get matching minors for roughing creating some 4×4 hockey. Jayson Megna fires a puck around the glass to clear it out and ends up shattering the class stopping play for repairs.
That is how game one would end the WBS Penguins beating the St. John’s IceCaps 3-2 despite the final push by the IceCaps, getting a lead in the series 1-0 and looking toward game two in St. Johns.
