Victoria - August 29, 2013 - The Victoria Royals’ 2013 Intra-Squad Game took place Wednesday night at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre as Team White squared off with Team Blue.

The game marked the end of training camp and saw a total of 38 players participate. Team White gave Coleman Vollrath the start in net, while Griffen Outhouse took to the crease for Team Blue.

Team Blue struck first near the halfway mark of the opening frame. From the right point, veteran defender Brett Cote fed a seeing-eye pass to Brayden Dunn who was stationed to the left of the crease.

The Royals’ 2013 WHL Bantam Draft pick converted the pass with a one-timer past the outstretched leg of Vollrath. Both goaltenders were called upon to make key stops in the first as Dunn’s marker held up as the period’s lone goal.

Team White knotted the game up just 15 seconds into the middle frame. Defenceman Kolton Dixon led the rush along the left wing before he snapped a low shot past Outhouse. At the 10 minute mark, Evan Smith replaced Vollrath in net for Team White, while Markus Daly took over for Team Blue.

Trent Lofthouse would stake Team White to their first lead of the game with eight minutes to play when he converted on his own rebound in front of the net. Team White then added another goal three minutes later when Matthew Campese was sent in alone on a breakaway. The winger slipped a nifty backhanded deke around the goaltender for a 3-1 Team White lead after two periods of play.

Cote cut the lead to one for Team Blue 90 seconds into the third period. Off of an offensive zone face-off win, Cote rocketed a shot from the point past a screened Smith. Team Blue continued to press for the equalizing goal throughout the period with their best opportunity coming on the man advantage with two minutes to play. Matt Dykstra received a pass at the right face-off dot, but the winger rifled a shot off of the near post. Daly was called to the bench for the extra attacker as Blue pushed for the tie, but Team White held on for the victory.

Team White went 0/1 = 0.0% on powerplay, while Team Blue went 0/3 = 0.0%. Team White outshot Team Blue 39-38.

The Royals will travel south of the border Friday morning to begin their 2013 WHL Pre-Season schedule. Victoria will head down to Everett, WA to play three games this weekend against the Everett Silvertips, Seattle Thunderbirds and Tri-City Americans. The Royals’ only home pre-season contest will come Saturday, September 14th when the club welcomes the Vancouver Giants to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. An afternoon puck drop is slated for 1:35 p.m.
