Oil Kings fall to Broncos, Corbett with three point night
The Edmonton Oil Kings kicked off their preseason schedule on Saturday night, falling 5-3 to the Swift Current Broncos at Servus Place. While netminder Trisatn Jarry was not at his best, allowing three goals against in the opening twenty minutes of action, defenceman Cody Corbett had himself a three point outing, with a pair of goals and an assist.

Edmonton - September 1, 2013 - The Edmonton Oil Kings preseason got off to a slow start Saturday as three first-period goals against led to a 5-3 loss to the Swift Current Broncos at Servus Place.

The Oil Kings opened their 7th Annual Preseason Invitational presented by Toyota RAV4 Game On in a 3-0 hole as the Broncos jumped all over goaltender Tristan Jarry early on.

A pair of goals from overage defenceman Cody Corbett cut the lead to 3-2, and Mitchell Walter made it 3-3 midway through the second, but the Oil Kings couldn’t find the net again, while Glenn Gawdin, Coda Gordon and Bobby Zinkan all scored for Swift Current.

“Swift Current came out and came at us hard, but I think we did a good job responding,” said Oil Kings centre Curtis Lazar, who wore the captain’s “C” for the game with team captain Griffin Reinhart away attending New York Islanders training camp.

“It’s good to get the nerves out,” said Jarry who allowed four goals on 14 shots. “I thought we played pretty well. Had a couple chances here and there, probably had a few chances we’d like to have back, but I think it was good.”

Patrick Dea split duties with Jarry, talking over at the halfway point in the game, and allowed two goals on 13 shots.

The Oil Kings outshot the Broncos 36-27. Landon Bow made all 33 saves in net for Swift Current. Both teams were 1-6 on the power play.

In other scores from the tournament, the Prince George Cougars defeated the Red Deer Rebels 8-4, and the Calgary Hitmen were 6-3 winners over the Medicine Hat Tigers.

All six teams in the tournament are back in action Sunday, starting with Prince George vs. Medicine Hat at 11:00 a.m. Calgary and Swift Current will square off at 3:00 p.m. and the Oil Kings and Rebels will cap the night off beginning at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door, and one ticket gives admission to all three of Sunday’s games.
