Calgary - September 5, 2013 - According to reports, Brian Burke could soon be joining the Calgary Flames in an executive position.

TSN's Bob McKenzie said Wednesday night on Twitter that the move to Calgary, reported by several different publications, could soon be completed.

The Flames on Thursday sent out a press release advising of an announcement to be made at Scotiabank Saddledome at 12 p.m. ET.

"Could very well get done. Enough moving parts/complexities that there could be issues," McKenzie tweeted.

Burke was most recently the general manager and president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, but his four-year tenure there came to end with his firing in January. During his time as GM, the Maple Leafs went 129-135-42 but did not make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Presently, Burke is a part-time scout for the Anaheim Ducks, the team he led to the Stanley Cup as general manager in 2007.

During his executive career, Burke served as the director of hockey operations for the Vancouver Canucks starting in 1987. In 1993, he joined the Hartford Whalers as general manager, but left after a year to join the NHL as an executive vice president and director of hockey operations. He left the League four years later to return to Vancouver as the team's general manager, a position he filled until 2004. He then joined the Ducks, winning the Cup in 2007.

A year later, he joined the Maple Leafs to begin an overhaul of the organization. His bold moves -- including the trades for defenseman Dion Phaneuf and forward Phil Kessel -- did not pay the short-term dividends desired and the club failed to make the playoffs in Burke's four years.

Earlier this summer, the Flames discussed a front-office position with Brendan Shanahan, the NHL's director of player safety.

Adding fuel to the rumors, Burke arrived in Calgary on Wednesday. He has a daughter in the area, according to reports, and is also scheduled to be at a Thursday night fundraiser for the Lloydminster Bobcats, a team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Approached by reporters at the Calgary airport on Wednesday night, Burke did not address the reports.

"I'm not going to talk about it tonight," Burke said to reporters. "Sorry you had to camp out here."
