Windsor - September 14, 2013 - Two quick goals from Steven Janes early in the first period were enough to lead the Windsor Spitfires to their second pre-season win in a 5-2 victory over the Niagara IceDogs Friday night at the WFCU Centre.

Janes continued to have the hot hand as he tapped in a pass from Josh Ho-Sang to open the scoring 5:49 into the first period.

He added another goal just two minutes later.

“We talked about (getting pucks on net) before the game,” said Janes.

“My first one was a gift from Ho-Sang on the powerplay and then I remember coming down wide and getting it on net. I’m glad it went in.”

With four goals in the last two games, Janes is leading the way offensively for the Spitfires.

“I’ve been playing with a lot more confidence this year,” said Janes. “I feel like it’s helping me out a bit.”

The IceDogs struck back with two goals of their own early in the second period, beating goaltender Jordan DeKort twice in less than five minutes. Those would be the only two shots that would get passed the netminder, as the Spitfires locked it down defensively after that.

“You have to forget about it,” said DeKort of allowing two quick goals. “You have to have a short memory especially when you’re playing in a big game like this.”

Ho-Sang (1G, 2A) converted a pass from Ryan Moore 6:04 into the third period to give the Spitfires a 3-2 lead.

A couple of late goals from Yazkov (1G, 3A) and Moore sealed the win for the home side.

Dekort made 20 saves for the win, making some timely saves that seemed to get the Spitfires going.

“It’s a team effort,” said DeKort. “You have to play team defence and sometimes you have to do whatever you can to keep the puck out of your net.”

The Windsor Spitfires will face the Oshawa Generals in their home opener Sept. 19 at the WFCU Centre.
