Brandon - September 22, 2013 - The Wheat Kings beat the Moose Jaw Warriors in Saturday's Home Opener to complete a season opening weekend series sweep.

The Wheat Kings built up a 3-0 first period lead en route to a 3-1 victory before over 4,400 fans at Westman Communications Group Place.

After scoring three times in Brandon's 6-3 opening night victory in Moose Jaw on Friday night, 18-year old Taylor Cooper opened the scoring for the second straight night in the first, 17-year old John Quennville added one in the second and 20-year old Chad Robinson rounded out the scoring in the third.

Veteran netminder Curtis Honey was solid between the pipes for the second straight night, turning aside 40 Moose Jaw shots including a dozen in the final six minutes of the third when the Warriors threw everything at the Brandon net.

The only Warrior to beat him was Brayden Point, with his second of the weekend, with just over three minutes remaining in regulation time.

Veteran defenceman Eric Roy, who returned from the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames earlier this week, added three assists.

Saturday's game marked the season debuts of 17-year old Brett Kitt of Brandon, 17-year old defenceman Riley Van Horne of Calgary and 16-year old Jesse Gabrielle of Moosomin, who spent the 2012-13 season with Eagan High School in Minnesota.

15-year old defenceman Kale Clague meanwhile made his Brandon debut in only his second career WHL game. Ineligible to play in the WHL this season, the Lloydminster product dressed for both weekend games as the Wheat Kings battle a rash of early season injuries on their blueline.

The 2-0 Wheat Kings don't play again until next weekend when they travel to Prince Albert for a 2-game series with the Raiders. Brandon's next home game is Wednesday, October 2nd against the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings.
